I'm Emil Minty, an Australian former child actor who played The Feral Kid, a feral child in the 1981 film Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior.
I Emil Minty, born December 1972 in Brisbane Queensland Australia, with Aboriginal heritage.
At the age of 8 years old, I was selected by George Miller, the Director, for the part in a 1981 movie which starred an up-and-coming actor named Mel Gibson.
The movie was Mad Max 2 (known as The Road Warrior in the USA) and it propelled me into international stardom as an 8-year-old, even though I never spoke a word in the film!
After Mad Max 2 I had minor parts in other movies as Toby in Fluteman in 1982, Andy Marlow in The Winds Of Jarrah in 1983, Gary Doyle in Top Kid in 1985, Thommo in Alice to Nowhere in 1986, Patrick in The Haunted School in 1987, Wayne Barbuto in Peter & Pompey in 1988, Young Nick in Captain James Cook in 1987, Andy Lawson in The Flying Doctors in 1988, Dodo in Road to Alice in 1992, I also did a few TV commercials and most recently I voiced a character in Wasteland 3 video game in 2020.
The Feral Kid
The Feral Kid, a boy who lives in the wasteland near the refinery settlement. He speaks only in growls and grunts. The boy wears shorts and boots made from hide, and defends himself with a lethal metal boomerang which he can catch using an improvised glove.
The Feral Kid is an adept survivor and a vicious warrior. Armed with a razor-sharp boomerang, which he can throw with astonishing range and accuracy, possessing both effective cover and infiltrating skills, he is an invaluable asset to the stronghold.
The Feral Kid’s backstory was coined by Emil Minty (with help of his dad) as part of the auditioning process.
“We were asked to come up with a story on how we thought we became The Feral Kid out in this Wasteland and, you know, my short story was we were flying with my parents in a plane. Landed, no fuel, dad went to find fuel (and) never came back. Mum went to find dad, never came back and I was left to fend for myself and ... well that's how it all began!”
The movie was filmed in the outback NSW mining town of Broken Hill and the 'scenery' in the film is precisely the type of countryside for hundreds of miles surrounding Broken Hill.
The Feral Kid was taken in by Pappagallo’s tribe. He has grown up communicating only by bestial noises. The Kid is fascinated by the newcomer Max Rockatansky, who gives him a small wind-up music box scavenged from the road. Having lost his own son in the previous film, Max remains aloof.
The Kid proves his mettle against Lord Humungus’ gang by using a sharpened boomerang to kill the Golden Youth, sending Wez into a murderous rage. When he is in danger of being killed it is Max who notices, saves him, and gives him a hand up into the cabin of the truck.
At the very end of the film, we see him on the bus with the surviving villagers, gazing out the window. The narrator’s informs us that he was that child, and that he writes this history so that the Road Warrior, whoever he was, would be remembered for saving them all, and that someday he, this child and now adult narrator, would become the leader of the villagers, who would go on to re-establish civilization.
